History of the WDSQL

The origins of the Woking & District Sports Quiz League (WDSQL) began around 1987 when Meadow Sports Football Club & Old Wokingians Football Club needed to raise funds to finance a clubhouse on the playing fields at Loop Road, nearby Woking Football Club's stadium.

Brian Woodbridge, then Chairman of Meadow Sports decided to arrange a sports quiz for local clubs to help generate money through entry fees and bar takings. An advertisement was listed in the local newspaper and approximately 30 teams, ranging from sports clubs, associations, work teams and pubs signed up. Due to the high response several nights of heats were required followed by a grand final. This event run for about three years until Dave Smith of Magna Carta proposed setting up a regular sports quiz league, and following a meeting between Dave Smith, Brian Woodbridge and Colin Woodbridge of Chobham Cricket Club it was decided that teams would be invited to join.  As a result, 11 teams signed up and the league was officially formed. The inaugural season was 1991/1992 and consisted of the following founding members listed below:

Founder Members: Magna Carta, St. John’s Wood Strollers, M.A.F.F., Hurst CC, Old Suttonians CC, Crown Inn, New Inn, Woking Referees, King’s Meadow, Old Suttonians FC, West Byfleet CC, Chobham CC, Beaumont Sport

These teams were divided into three divisions, four in Division 1, four in Division 2 and five in Division 3 with promotion and relegation at the end of the season.  During the season each team would host a quiz and set the questions for several rounds covering sports including athletics, boxing, cricket,  football, golf, horse racing, rugby and tennis. The matches were played at various venues, usually at the clubhouse of that week's host team, unlike now where every event is at West End Social Club. â€‹ Over the next few years the league grew reaching a peak of 17 teams for three seasons between 1995 and 1998. A number of additional competitions were also added including singles and pairs, buzzer cups and football only quizzes. A full historical list of the winners can be seen on our Roll of Honour page.

The WDSQL has run continuously since 1991, with the exception of one season due to Covid, but now only has five remaining teams competing in one single division. The league and its current players would love the WDSQL to continue for many more years to come, but require new teams and players to join in order for this to happen. Therefore, if you would like to try, either as a player or as a team please contact the WDSQL here. â€‹
