2025/26 Season Review & AGM

The 2025/26 season was the 35th year of the league which first began in 1991. The league format was the same as the previous season with all six teams in a single division played alongside the Handicap League, which was won by Northwood Town. The league title was won by London Calling helped by the return of Matt Behan to their regular line up and former Sports Mastermind winner Chris Bell, who made six appearances. Conversely, Northwood winners in 2024 & 2025 made a slow start due to a couple of early season absences of John Hayes leaving them with too much ground to make up.

In other competitions the Buzzer Cup under its new single night round robin format was played without the use of a buzzer as the equipment could not be found. However, we muddled through and Boxgrove Scorpions deservedly claimed a second Buzzer Cup crown, their first since 2012. The 2025/26 Football Buzzer Cup has been rescheduled and will be played during the first half of the 2026/27 season.

In the individual events Matt Behan of London Calling won the Division 1 singles pipping Howard Mandy on the last match. The Dave Smith Cup was won for the first time by Albert Sanders of St. Johns Wood Strollers, who have now won the past three editions with three different players.

In other events the season ending Woodbridge Shield was a 3-way tie with Northwood, London Calling & Boxgrove all finishing on 127 points. The Football Quiz was won by Kingsmeadow for the second season running, and The Geoff Richards Trophy for the best quiz of the season was awarded to London Calling’s first quiz with an average score of 7.8.

AGM

Next season, our 36th year, and will feature only five teams in a single league format, due to the withdrawal of London Calling. The key proposals passed were as follows:

1 The two Buzzer Cup competitions will be played as single night events in a round robin format with the top two contesting a final.

2 Each team would again be hosting two league matches along with three confirmed guest hosts, but we would be seeking at least two more to replace the two lost due to the league having one less team. The idea of playing a Ryder Cup style event was suggested if not enough guests could be sourced.

3 It was agreed that if teams have a fifth participant they would be allowed to play as it was felt the league should not be discouraging potential players.
